Ballarat Residents and Ratepayers Association Inc (BRRA) has formed a sub?committee called the "Civic Hall Project Citizens Committee". Its purpose is to work on assessing the Council's civic hall proposed project from the perspective of the benefits to the community and the city.
The five members of the group are
James Coghlan, ex?Mayor of City of Ballarat
Ian Olver, accountant
Dr Elisa Backer, President of BRRA
Peter Toohey, accountant
David Fawell, retired lawyer
Committee spokesperson, James Coghlan has said "the main concern is the amount of money being spent and how that should be spent in terms of the huge opportunity cost foregone for the community - such as infrastructure programs and services"
"It would be very disappointing to see the biggest project ever undertaken by the Council benefiting themselves instead of the people" said Mr Coghlan.
"The group's main concern is for Ballarat and its citizens."
"Private enterprise should decide where they locate. Council should be planners not developers" he said.
As the working party under BRRA, the group will aim to share the load of some of the tasks that will need to be driven over the short time frame left before Council hears submissions on the planning application to demolish the existing Civic hall building and build its new office building.
The group had its first meeting last night and will be putting together a flyer for the community to explain to concerned people how to put together a submission and what are relevant planning issues and how to go about it.
Businesses wanting to support this educational flyer can contact BRRA via email brra@live.com.au or phone 0428 345 134 to request to house the flyers.
